How Often Should You Change Your AC Filters?

When your AC has to deal with hot San Antonio weather, it can take a bit of a beating. One thing you can do to keep your AC working at full potential is change the air filter regularly. Here’s everything you need to know about changing your AC filter.

How Often?

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to say how often you should change your air filter exactly. It may need to be changed as often as once a month depending on the conditions inside your home, or it may only need to be changed twice a year. The only way to really know when your AC filter needs to be changed is to check it and see how dirty it looks. The more clogged the air filter in your AC is, the more trouble your AC will have. A clogged filter reduces airflow and compromises indoor air quality.

If you’re not comfortable changing the air filter on your AC, Rosenberg Indoor Comfort offers an AC maintenance service to keep your system running at full capacity.

Choosing the Right Filter

It’s important to consider the different air filters you have available to you when replacing your AC filter. Air filters have a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating that determines the size of particles they’re able to filter out of the air. The higher the MERV rating on an air filter is, the smaller the particles it can filter out. For optimal indoor air quality in most residential homes, an air filter with a MERV rating of 12 will get the job done. That being said, many people opt for an air filter with a lower MERV rating to save money, and those will work, too.
